According to Fiona, the thinly disguised "Mother Nature" in Morningstone, songs composed and arranged with specific programs in mind, the best of which are seamless marriages of lyric, melody, tonality and rhythm, may properly be described as spells, and their composers and lyricists, literally enchanters who set words (or scenes) to music that keeps "going 'round and 'round in your head," even when there is no external source of music to be heard. This happy combination of visuals, lyrics and music is also the stuff of sympathetic magic, an inherent part of the mystery revealed in Morningstone. Many of my favorite composers
wrote program music. Debussy's Impressionistic works, Stravinsky's
brilliant ballets and Richard Strauss' symphonic poems were all program
music. At their center was the intention to convey in music, a sense
of their subject. Jerry Goldsmith's score for Planet of the Apes,
John Williams' score for Star Wars and Maurice Jarre's score for Lawrence
of Arabia are all program music and so is my music for Morningstone.
