BEMUSED:  FIRST CANTO

To be bemused is to be lost in thought, preoccupied, frequently in the passive voice.  In Bemused:  First Canto we have Morgan's first musical reaction to the mysteries around him.  In it, he ponders the wonders he has experienced thus far,

It's not clear and I can't be sure
I get the strange sensation that I've been this way before
The feeling is elusive.  It's like trying to pick up sand.
The more you try to hold it, the less stays in your hand.
Some friends have suggested that I meld all three Bemused Cantos into a single song, but from the start, Bemused was meant to be three separate pieces — and three separate spells.  The musical development in Bemused:  Second Canto and Bemused:  Third Canto is delightful in its simplicity, but they are both, like Bemused:  First Canto, reflective pieces.  The impact of their lyrics and melodic aspirations derive from and are enhanced by their positions within the whole.  To fully appreciate each of these little songs, I think one needs to be aware of the musical, lyrical and visual experiences that trigger Morgan's bemused state.

On the other hand, when I contemplate BEMUSED as a song in its own right, and not as a leitmotiv of Morningstone, I must admit that my friends may be right . . .
