THE STRANGER, PART TWO

The program continues.  Morgan's escape is into his unconscious, and this hypnotic song clears his path.  We've already dealt with the first verse at the live May Eve concert and the second verse, as he slips into his coccoon to be taken away from all the frenzied fans and noise of the real world.  Roused from that healing sleep before he fully recovers, Morgan rebels, fleeing his responsibilities in his flashy sports car, returning to that pleasant otherworld of dreams — but this time, without a chauffeur!  Morgan is driving the car!  Inexorably, the song works its spell, helped along by the rhythm of the windshield wipers, the repetition of the broken stripe in the roadway, the gentle splatter of the raindrops, the sizzle of his tires on the wet pavement, the throaty purr of his exhaust and the seductive lyrics, inviting him to rest.

"Poor thing.  You're really feeling sleepy.
Lie back.  All those eerie feelings will go away.
Softly.  Surrender is no sin.
Easy.  Open up and let me in.

So pretty, pretty, predee, perdee, per-deeper, deeper, deeper..."

And Morgan falls asleep behind the wheel — until a voice (not on the music tracks, breaks through the spell, calling his name.  He opens his eyes just in time to see a DOE, standing in the middle of the road, frozen in his headlights, staring motionless at the oncoming sportscar!  Morgan swerves to avoid hitting the deer, going off the road, crashing through some shrubbery along the shoulder of the road before he regains control and gets back on the road, again, now wide awake, shaken by the close call.  The Stranger comes back triumphant, immortal, after all.
"I'm the one, THE STRANGER!
I'm the one.   I make your dreams come true.
I'm the one, THE STRANGER!
Listen and I'll put my spell on you."
And the Three Muses witness his arrival within their sacred precincts and rejoice, dancing out into the road in his wake.
