| Morgan's hope of being
alone with Laura is swiftly dashed by garrulous Fiona, who has been preparing
the cottage for Morgan's arrival. She's brought homemade wine and
is making a stew for Morgan's supper. She tells Morgan that Newbegin,
like Fairchild or Merriweather, is a festival name, the sort given to children
conceived at festivals, where a mother could hardly be expected to know
who the father might be . . .
MYSTICAL
ENCOUNTER WITH LAURA
Laura and Fiona leave to
prepare for their festival, so Morgan pours himself another goblet of Fiona's
"elixir," and discovers the bread left for him is baked in the
form of a nude woman! He dozes off and awakens to find Laura, alone,
stirring the stew. He embraces her. They kiss. They wrestles
to the couch, but he tumbles off onto the floor and awakens alone, clinging
to the loaf of bread! |
